FAQs

What are the different paths to fostering and/or adoption?

There are 3 primary paths to foster care and adoption:

Foster Care: Children in foster care have come into the custody of the state after removal from a parent or caregiver due to abuse or neglect. Sometimes, foster care situations can end in an adoption, but the first goal for children in foster care is reunification with their biological family. There are also a group of older waiting children that are currently available for adoption through the state.

Domestic Adoption: This is also known as "private adoption" or "domestic infant adoption" and involves the connection of a prospective adoptive family with an expectant mom who is choosing to place her baby for adoption. This happens within the United States and can vary slightly depending on the specific state in which the adoption occurs.

International Adoption: This involves the adoption of a child from outside of the Unites States. Every country has its own rules and regulations, and every country has a specific population of children needing international adoption. Families will work with a US agency that partners with an agency in the child's birth country.

Each of these paths has its own set of options. We encourage you to prayerfully consider each path with your spouse or trusted support person.

How much does it cost to foster or adopt?

Depending on which path you choose, the cost can vary. If choosing to foster or adopt through foster care/the state, the financial ask is very low. In fact, foster parents receive a stipend to support caring for the child(ren) in the home while they are fostering. Both domestic and international adoption can come with significant cost (between $30,000 and $60,000). However, don't let the financial aspect be a barrier for pursuing something you feel called to. There are many ways to help finance an adoption and we can help you find them!

Who can foster or adopt?

While there are specific requirements surrounding each path of fostering or adoption, we encourage you to seek more information no matter the stage of life you are in.
